Comprehensive Cat Genetics
BA for cats includes genetic configurations for over thirty five of the most common breeds of cat, covering both coat color inheritance and congenital diseases. We provide coverage of over thirty congenital defects for which the mode of inheritance is known.
Publisher Feature
The 'publisher feature' is a means to create restricted access BA databases. Its designed for people and organizations who wish to distribute animal data to third parties with restrictions on its use and further redistribution. Typical uses include breed clubs who wish to distribute club breed data to their members whilst being sure it cannot be redistributed to others. Please see also our open data access policy.
Show Entry Forms
Breeders Assistant can completely fill out your show entry forms using our powerful PDF print-merge facility, using genuine forms supplied by the registries.
PDF Print Merging
Breeders Assistant can merge-print external PDF documents with data from a BA database, printing the merged document in a single pass. This is primarily intended for printing the likes of show entry and litter registration forms using genuine PDF forms supplied by the registries. We include a comprehensive merge-form designer so you can add your own PDF merge documents, merging any fields from your database to any specific location. Very useful for organizations who need to print on highly custom forms.
Advanced Database Features
We provide various tools for maintaining your database. E.g. a means to run various inconsistency checks such as females recorded as sires. Various global operations are available such as global search & replace, case conversion and field transfer.
Inbreeding & Common Ancestors
BA has very fast calculation of Wright's coefficient of inbreeding, to a maximum of 60 generations. We can produce reports of ancestor circularities (self-parenting) - individually for specific records or across a whole database. BA doesn't just calculate imbreeding for a single animal at a time - you can even tabulate it for all animals in the database. You can create reports on common ancestors, view their individual contributions to the inbreeding coefficient, tag the common ancestors, and more.
Import From Text Pedigrees
Do you ever find yourself entering a text pedigree into your database by hand? Not with Breeders Assistant - it can import them directly - adding the separate records for new ancestors and merging known ancestors with existing records. And it can import many different styles of text pedigree. You can even design templates for new pedigree formats.

Calligraphic Text
Along with our support for decorative borders & corners you can include calligraphic text for many common wordings used in pedigrees - such as 'Pedigree Certificate', 'Trial Pedigree' etc. We include many calligraphic typefaces to choose from.
Circular Pedigrees
BA can produce a circular pedigree - where the ancestors are presented in concentric rings rather than the more typical tabular layout.
Image Pedigrees
An image pedigree is simply a 'printed' pedigree thats saved to an image file (PNG, JPEG or BMP) instead of actually being printed. So you can include any of our superb printed pedigrees on your web site, or send them in email as attachments.
Forms Designer
Breeders Assistant is supplied with a large range of standard forms - pedigrees, contracts, pedigree cover sheets, trial pedigrees etc. You can customize them using our forms designer, or add completely new ones.
Mating Certificates
Some versions of Breeders Assistant can print mating certificates. Useful if you're a stud owner - you can give a mating certificate to the owner of the visiting female. The certificate includes details of the stud including a mini pedigree, details of the owner and female and mating details such as the expected date of birth. Available in various styles. UK
Tagging
Tagging is a means of marking records so that you can then apply a given operation to all tagged records in a single step. Tags can be applied manually or you can tag the results of searches.
Advanced Printer Control
Use our advanced printer configuration mechanism for fine control of printer and paper settings on a document by document basis. Print on different printers, with different paper sizes, feed trays etc within constantly changing your printer settings.
Entering Genotypes
Breeders Assistant has fields for recording genotypes - e.g. breed genotype, disease genotype, etc. With many versions of BA, in particular the dog and cat versions, we provide 'user friendly' screens for selecting genotypes rather than keying them in directly. These are carefully customized for most of the common breeds of cat and dog.
Polygenic Inheritance Modelling
BA can model polygenic traits using configrable value ranges e.g. for recording hip dysplasia using either the OFA (American) or BVA (UK) coding schemes. It can perform various statistical analyses on these including 2 forms of covariance analysis.
Mating Predictions
BA can predict genotypes and phenotypes of offspring based on the genotypes of parents. E.g. to include a mating prediction in a trial pedigree.
Gene Inheritance Probabilities
We can estimate the probability of gene inheritance based on the known genotypes of the ancestors. Useful for deducing the likelihood of carrier gene inheritance etc.
Covariance Analysis
Breeders Assistant can calculate covariance of polygenic traits - both covariance between traits (to assess any tendency for the traits to be inherited together) - and covariance of a single trait between relatives (to assess the heritability of the trait).
Gene Frequency Analysis
Breeders Assistant will calculate gene frequencies over a groups of animals.
Label Printing
Breeders Assistant can print directly to sheets of labels such as Avery labels. Designed for printing mailing labels from your contact records, but can be used to print any type document within BA e.g. cage cards, mini pedigrees, etc.
