This is a mechanism for distributing breed databases with access controls to restrict further redistribution and to limit what use may be made of the data.
Who Might Find This Useful?
A breed club might wish to distribute its own private breed database to its members for their personal use.
Anyone who has created a breed database and is looking for a secure way to publish this electronically, possibly for commercial gain.
A breed registry could use this as the platform for secure publication of breed information.
Breed databases distributed in this way offer major advantages over both traditional print publishing and other 'static' forms of electronic publishing - e.g. PDF. By making the data available in a pedigree database, users can 'link' their own animals to the published information - e.g. to create very deep pedigrees or to calculate inbreeding over many generations of ancestors - without their being able to 'misuse' the supplied data by transferring it to others or modifying it.
Does This Mean You Can't Export From Ordinary Breeders Assistant Databases?
Not at all. The access controls only apply to data obtained from BA generated 'published' databases. So records that are entered manually or by normal import are not affected and may be freely exported. The purpose of the publisher feature is to provide a secure mechanism for distributing breed databases to third parties in such a way that the further distribution and use of the information in those databases is controlled.
'Published' databases are encrypted and require an unlock code to use. Unlock codes are issued by the publisher of the database, and are normally tied to specific BA serial numbers. This means that a given unlock code can only be used by a specific customer and for a specific database. Note that BA databases do not use any standard database structure. They are stored in a proprietary format, the details which are not published. The format is complex, using various compression schemes to reduce the file size of the database files.
To use the publisher feature you need the Professional Edition of Breeders Assistant. Use of published databases by recipients only requires the Personal Edition.
