Breeders Assistant - Importing Data

Breeders Assistant provides powerful features for importing and exporting data.

We believe you should have open data access to your data - you can freely export your data using CSV(text) and XML formats.

Breeders Assistant can convert your data from many sources. It is your responsibility to only use these facilities to convert data where you have the legal right to do so.

 Text files (CSV)
 XML (OPSX)
 Built-in Converters - for ANIM-ALL, Compuped (v4), and KCBS
 Other Programs
 GEDCOM
 Text Pedigrees

Text files (CSV) - Breeders Assistant provides a powerful and highly configurable facility for importing data in text (CSV) format. Your options include:
-Choice of exactly which fields you want to import, and in what order.
-Select delimiter (normally comma) and field quotation options.
-Whether or not to ignore any heading line (e.g. with column titles).
-Whether to import from a text file or from the clipboard.
-Whether to automatically add newly discovered titles to the standard titles lists.
-Whether to auto-detect the breed registry from the registration numbers - especially useful in the cat version of BA for CFA breeders and TICA breeders*.
-Whether you want to be prompted to resolve import ambiguities. E.g. if you're importing an owner name of 'Mr Smith' but you have 2 existing contacts 'Mr A Smith' and 'Mr B Smith', which one - if either of them - is it?.
-Whether you want imported records to be automatically tagged - useful for reviewing the imported data once its been merged into your database.

The software also supports multiple import configurations - so you can switch between completely different import layouts quickly. It has equivalently powerful CSV export features as well.

XML (OPSX) - Breeders Assistant provides import and export of XML pedigree data, formatted using the Open Pedigree Standard eXchange, an XML format developed by the Open Pedigree Software Group (OPSG - www.opsg.org). The OPSG is a collaboration between several pedigree software vendors that aims to promote open data exchange between pedigree programs, based around the OPSX XML standard for pedigree data.

Colin Manning, developer of Breeders Assistant, is a founding member of the OPSG.

Built-in Converters - Breeders Assistant has built-in converters for 3 other programs: ANIM-ALL (ANIMALL), Compuped (v4) and the Kennel Club Breed System (KCBS). If you have previously stored your pedigree data in any of these programs then you can use the built-in converter to directly transfer your data.

Other Programs - e.g. BellCats, BreedMate, The Breeders Data Manager (TBDM), The Breeders Standard (TBS), The Cattery Standard (TCS), Cattrax, Compuped (v3), Pedigree Explorer, Pedigrees 2000, Pet Records System, Tracer, WinPed (UK version), and various others.
Breeders Assistant does not have built-in converters for pedigree data stored using these programs. However, in many cases it is still possible for your data to be converted:
(i) Some programs include built-in export facilities so you can convert your data to a text file (.CSV) or similar. You might use this to extract your data for use in a spreadsheet (indeed, Breeders Assistant has such a feature). If you can extract your data like this, then you can almost certainly use it in conjunction with Breeders Assistant's powerful text file import facility to transfer your data to our product.
(ii) Some programs that do not provide text file export facilities are based on widely available database products, such as Microsoft Access. With these programs, the data files can often be directly opened with standard database tools. Sometimes, you can directly import data into Excel using its Import Data facility. In both cases you can then save your data as a text file, and then import direct to Breeders Assistant.
(iii) Failing that, please contact us for further advice/assistance.

GEDCOM - Breeders Assistant imports directly from GEDCOM (5.5) files. GEDCOM is a standard file format developer by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and is the de-facto standard for exchange of human genealogical data between computer programs. Our GEDCOM importer processes family (FAM) and individual (INDI) records in a highly configurable way that allows you to customize the import by specifying additional GEDCOM tags to be imported from the source data and transferred to selected fields within the Breeders Assistant database.

Text Pedigrees - Breeders Assistant can import directly from text pedigrees - both pedigrees generated by Breeders Assistant* and many text pedigree formats that are in common use on the internet to exchange pedigrees e.g. in mailing lists. Simply select Import from the Database menu, then select the Text Pedigree option. Choose the input source (clipboard/text file), select the number of generations and click Import. You can either get BA to attempt to intelligently deduce a suitable import format, or use a specific one. You can also set up new import 'templates' to handle new text pedigree layouts.
